Hurghada International Airport received the first flight from Moscow on Monday morning after nearly six years of suspension of direct flights from Russia to Egyptian resorts on the Red Sea.

The Airbus A330-300, operated by Egyptian airline EgyptAir, carried 300 Russian tourists.

EgyptAir Airlines CEO Amr Abul-Enein said flights between Russia and Egyptian Red Sea resorts, operated by EgyptAir for the first time, were in line with the recent decision to resume flights between Russia and the airports of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada.

Abul-Enein added that flights to Red Sea resorts are in addition to the ongoing daily flights between Cairo and Moscow, which will help provide new services and travel options that attract as many tourists as possible. Russian tourists in Egypt.

In October 2015, Russia suspended direct flights to Egyptian airports following a Russian flight crash in Sinai that killed all 224 people on board.

Egypt has since improved its safety and security measures at all airports in the country.

The country has also received several Russian security delegations to inspect security measures in the Red Sea and other airports.

Russian travelers are a major contributor to the country’s tourism industry, a key source of hard currency.

In April 2018, Russia resumed flights to Cairo International Airport, ending a 30-month suspension, but the Russian ban on flights to Egypt’s Red Sea destinations was only lifted in the month last, in accordance with the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Russian president‘s decision follows a phone call between Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Putin in April, in which they agreed to resume direct flights between Russia and airports in the Red Sea.

“The decision to resume flights to Red Sea airports was based on joint cooperation between Egypt and Russia and security measures at Egyptian airports,” said the Egyptian presidency at the time.
