Chelsea close in on Salzburg sporting director, Fabrizio Romano reveals
Speculation surrounding Christoph Freund’s transfer to Chelsea increased after the draw against RB Salzburg in the second round of the Champions League group stages last week.
The sporting director position is currently vacant under Todd Boehly’s administration as the new owner continues to make big changes club-wide, following his assumption of the role at the start of the year.
The sacking of Thomas Tuchel and the arrival of Graham Potter were the most recent changes to a Roman Abramovich Chelsea job, but it looks like Freund is about to steal the show.
The Salzburg director is best known for his unwavering ability to spot talent through data-driven scouting, and was the man behind deals for Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and perhaps most notably, Erling Haaland.

Freund has previously hinted at the move to the Blues and told Sky Sport Austria last week: “The new owners [at Chelsea] are interested in how we deal with young players, how we integrate them into the first team. But you do this again and again with other clubs [discuss strategies] – that’s it.”
But now transfer the insider fabrice romano revealed Chelsea are expected to reach an agreement on personal terms as soon as talks progress quickly and a full deal is expected to be signed soon.
Freund would work closely with Potter and become the final amendment to Boehly’s ideal hierarchy.
