Documentary Ghislaine Maxwell in progress – The Hollywood Reporter
A feature documentary examining the life and times of Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell is in the works for UK network Channel 4 and Roast Beef Productions, the Oscar-nominated banner behind films such as The square, Hell and back and Pussy Riot: a punk prayer.
Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? is directed by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Erica Gornall (Driving school for Saudi women) and marks the first major project of British television veteran Dorothy Byrne (Leaving Neverland, For Sama) since stepping down as Channel 4 News and Current Affairs Manager last year.
Scheduled to include interviews with Maxwell’s friends, lovers, colleagues, rivals and confidants, many of whom the producers say have never spoken publicly before, the film will chronicle her childhood in Oxford as the daughter of the famous media mogul and fraudster Robert Maxwell, his life in London, then his reinvention in New York, before meeting Epstein and becoming, according to Byrne, “perhaps the most controversial woman in America right now.”
Maxwell – as Epstein’s alleged prosecutor – will face trial later this year on charges of sex trafficking and involvement in abuse of underage girls, charges that could see her jailed for decades.
“Rarely does a woman face the heinous charges that Ghislaine Maxwell faces in New York court this summer,” Byrne said. “She was the golden child of notorious fraudster Robert Maxwell, his Lady Ghislaine. Oxford graduate, a socialite on two continents who became the associate of notorious pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, then founded a charity to save the oceans A woman with many faces who has lived many different lives But who really is Ghislaine Maxwell and what does her story tell us about high society in London and New York?
Talk to Hollywood reportr, Byrne added that the purpose of the film was to “craft exclusive journalism, using our capabilities as investigative journalists, with documentary filmmaking skills to produce an appropriate biographical portrait of someone who at first sight, seems incomprehensible to people. “
Mike Lerner of Roast Beef Production revealed that Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? will examine the enormous impact of Robert Maxwell – who possessed The mirror tabloid in the UK – and his shocking death in 1991 (he fell overboard from his yacht in the Atlantic).
“You cannot look at her life without examining her death, because her death and the revelations about her criminality have made her go from the daughter of a supposed billionaire to a return to a more normal financial situation”, a- he declared. “And I think it’s absolutely essential.”
Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? is produced by Byrne, Lerner and Katherine Haywood, with Channel 4’s Fozia Khan as editor.
“There will likely be a lot of Maxwell programming, but this film focuses on the beloved girl whose charm, influence, and last name have been used in the most powerful circles over the decades,” Channel 4’s Facts Officer Danny Horan said.
“This investigation aims to uncover his role in one of the most important current scandals in the world. This exploration of Ghislaine’s life will include a whole new revealing testimony from those who knew her best. Shedding light on how and why, despite rumors, she was able to maintain her privileged lifestyle for so long.
Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? joins a bustling marketplace for content about Epstein’s former girlfriend. Last month, a scripted series was announced by Eleventh Hour Films, supported by Sony Pictures Television, based on the popular podcast Ghislaine hunting.
