Grassley Joins Bill in Canceling Biden Administration’s Nord Stream 2 Actions, Extending Sanctions Against Russia
the State Department has reversed its previous position and is lifting the sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, the entity in charge of the pipeline, and Matthias Warnig, its CEO.
“A few days after Russian hackers successfully attacked an American pipeline, President Biden decided to give Vladimir Putin his own pipeline and give him a major geopolitical victory that crosses the NATO alliance,” said Senator Cramer. “At the risk of weakening America’s global position, the Biden administration is acquiescing in a misguided German strategy that will give Putin a hold over our allies in Europe. The Putin pipeline must be stopped, and I urge my colleagues to join this effort before the administration teaches the United States the hard way why energy security means national security.
If passed, the Powers Act:
- Build on the sanctions adopted in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of fiscal 2020, signed in December 2019 by former President Trump, by extending the sanctions to subcontractors of any entity that works on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
- Senator Cramer helped include these sanctions in the NDAA as a member of SASC. Learn more here.
- Reinstate the sanctions against the company managing the project as well as its corporate officers whose sanctions were lifted by President Biden’s administration.
with the generals and military candidates of President Biden to prevent its construction. The senator is also a member of the Senate Banking Committee, which is responsible for sanctions.
Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Braun (R-IN), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Rick Scott (R-FL), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), John Cornyn (R-TX), Joni Ernst (R-IA), John Hoeven (R-ND), Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
“The decision of the Biden administration to remove sanctions around the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to the benefit of Russia and Putin while canceling pipeline projects across the United States and killing thousands of jobs is truly astounding , ” said Senator Tillis. “Over the past four years, the United States has made tremendous strides in becoming energy independent and reducing our dependence on other countries to provide our energy, but the Biden administration is doing everything that it can to end this common sense goal and bring us back to the days of high gas prices and destructive job policies. I am proud to join my colleagues in overturning this terrible decision and reinstating the sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. ”
“The president should not take this as a good sign that he is receiving praise from a Kremlin spokesman and a Russian deputy foreign minister for a foreign policy decision.” said Senator Grassley. “The lifting of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline company and the former Stasi officer who runs it is a gift for Putin and his cronies. It is a waste of time to close pipelines with our close ally Canada and sign them in Russia. This undermines the safety of our frontline allies and makes us less energy self-sufficient at home. “
“It is unacceptable to see President Biden backing a Russian gas pipeline after he canceled the Keystone XL pipeline in Montana on the first day of his term in office,” said Senator Daines. “Biden’s actions are not only bad for our national security and our economy, he sends a terrible message to our allies and adversaries around the world. Instead of supporting American workers and American jobs, Biden is helping the Kremlin and empowering Putin while undermining the security of the United States and our allies.
“The Biden administration paving the way for the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a strategic mistake that harms the United States and strengthens Russian influence in the region and around the world,” said Senator Marshall. “President Biden’s hypocrisy in shutting down US pipelines and killing well-paying energy jobs in my home state, while allowing Vladimir Putin to complete his pipeline is astounding.
“The energy program of the Biden administration is destroying jobs, reducing the independence of the United States and increasingly depending on our adversaries, like Russia”, said Senator Rick Scott. “A few months after the cancellation of the Keystone pipeline, and the thousands of American jobs that go with it, Biden is getting closer to Putin and allowing him to easily control energy supplies in Europe. We cannot allow President Biden to put America and our allies last. Our bill calls for the reinstatement and extension of these sanctions against companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, so that the United States has the power to hold bad actors accountable. “
“President Biden’s cancellation of the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline has eliminated thousands of American jobs and reduced our country’s level of energy independence,” said Senator Hyde-Smith. “Now the Biden administration is adding insult to injury by paving the way for Russian energy domination by lifting sanctions related to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. The cancellation of those sanctions, which had received support from the bipartisan Congress earlier, sends the wrong message to many hard-working Americans, as well as to our European allies and adversaries around the world, ”said Senator Hyde-Smith. “Congress should act as soon as possible to reinstate these sanctions.”
“Supporting a Russian pipeline – especially in the wake of the colonial pipeline hack – is the exact opposite of what the administration should be doing,” said Senator Capito. “If it were operational, the Nord Stream II gas pipeline, mainly Russian public property, would reinforce the dependence of our European allies on the energy produced by Russia. Our legislation would ensure that companies are held accountable for their role in any construction of the Nord Stream II pipeline and take a stand against Russia’s attempt to dominate European energy markets. It’s time for the administration to support an energy agenda that puts America at the forefront by supporting American families, jobs, security and the energy economy. “
“The decision of the Biden administration to lift these critical sanctions undoubtedly makes Vladimir Putin and our opponents in the Kremlin very happy,” said Senator Cornyn. “This legislation will ensure that any further unilateral initiative by the Administration to waive these significant sanctions can now only be accomplished by act of Congress.”
“President Biden’s decision to lift sanctions and allow the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a gift to Vladimir Putin and a threat to national security. Last year, the Senate unanimously agreed that this pipeline, when completed, would harm the national and economic security of the United States. This new effort will allow the United States to reinstate these sanctions and thwart Putin’s intention to isolate and intimidate our European allies ”. said Senator Ernst.
“As the Biden administration blocks the Keystone XL pipeline at home, it lifts sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a project that seriously undermines our national security and puts our allies at risk while empowering our adversary. Russia”. said Senator Hoeven. “Congress, with strong bipartisan support, has imposed sanctions to shut down the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and this legislation will reinstate the sanctions lifted by the Biden administration, as well as extend the sanctions to prevent the completion of the Nord Stream 2 . “
“President Biden blocks American gas pipelines, putting thousands of Americans out of work, but gives the green light for a Russian gas pipeline to send their higher emitting gas to Europe,” says Dr Cassidy. “It’s more about the reverse energy policy that we see from this administration. Nord Stream 2 is a risk to national security and strengthens Putin’s regime. The sanctions should never have been lifted. “
