In the midst of a political storm over the draft report of the boundary commission in Jammu and Kashmir, The President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, has announced that her party will participate in the next legislative elections in the Union territory.
Addressing a rally of party workers on Sunday in Poonch, Mehbooba Mufti urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to wholeheartedly support the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) candidates in the upcoming elections.
The PAGD is an alliance between several regional political parties in Jammu and Kashmir with the common goal of restoring the special status and statehood of J&K which was revoked in 2019.
‘CAN’T LEAVE ROOM FOR BJP’
Mehbooba Mufti said on Sunday: “It became clear after the interim report of the delimitation commission that they want to seize power by all means and send the candidates and parties to the Assembly who will affix a seal of approval on their illegal decision of August 5. 2019.”
“Ours is a fight for the protection of the resources, culture and rich heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. Whether PAGD voters fight alone or in alliance, people should wholeheartedly support these candidates. We cannot leave any democratic space for the BJP to trample. We cannot leave the ground open to the BJP,” she added.
BJP, CONGRESS REACT
Mocking the PDP, the BJP said it welcomed the decision of the party led by Mehbooba Mufti to stand for election.
“Wisdom has finally imposed itself on the PDP. It’s good that they decided to fight against the elections. But the PDP will face a massive defeat in the Assembly polls,” said senior BJP official and former J&K Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta.
Meanwhile, the Congress party appreciated the PDP’s decision to fight the election.
“It is in the national interest that each dominant political party participate in the elections. We welcome PDP’s decision. This will strengthen democracy. Mehbooba Mufti has every right to campaign for his party and PAGD candidates. She also has the right to ask the people not to vote for the BJP and other political groups closer to the saffron party,” Ravinder Sharma, J&K Congress chief spokesperson, told India Today.
