Limerick: Dispatches from the Treaty City
It’s time for another Shannon Shore update and as usual there’s plenty of recent releases to catch up on and a host of fantastic gigs to look forward to.
A few weeks ago we have the first new version of when young in two years and the now duo quickly followed up with their latest single The Laundress, a metaphorical vision of washing away pain. This is another stellar track from the talented Limerick duo.
Another man who has been extremely busy is MuRli who has contributed to some amazing collaborations, both with Sligo natives. First there was Ready with Elaine Mai which they launched at All Together Now over the summer, and his latest partnership sees him team up with Bridin to Functioning from his impressive self-titled debut album.
And we also had releases from two new bands on the Limerick music scene, 50 foot woman may be young, but they’ve already turned heads with a slew of catchy supporting slots around town and their recent single Glen Danzig is another hard-hitting piece of punk.
Even cooler are Dopamine corrector whose first outing shoot to kill was recently featured on the fundraising compilation album ‘Ukraine – We Stand by You’ to raise funds for the Doras Ukrainian Refugee Appeal Fund in Limerick.
And speaking of albums, at the end of last month sea damage launched their stellar debut album “Incessant” at Kashbah Social Club and what an epic sonic experience this long player is.
Another notable long player is ‘Lismullane’ from Emptiness who are four alternative post-hardcore musicians, and their debut is certainly catchy. Finally, The Hitchers celebrated the 25th anniversary of “It’s All Fun and Games Til Someone Loses an Eye” with a reissue of that album as well as a joyous reunion concert at Dolan Warehouse.
And speaking of Dolan, he’s hosting Pussy Riot: Riot Days, an innovative combination of live music, theater and video. Pussy Riot should be well known to all given their courageous provocative guerrilla punk rock performances with lyrics promoting feminism, LGBT rights and opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin and this multimedia show is a personal story of Alyokhina as as a member of Pussy Riot, his actions in Red Square and the Cathedral, his arrest, his court appearance and his time in prison. This unique presentation of Seoda Shows can be seen on November 14, with the support in the night of the theater pretty happy.
Red Sun Alert is an up-and-coming post-hardcore band from Cork City, this all-girl band combines harsh vocals with raw guitar riffs and math-rock and appears at Pharmacia on November 17 with special guests Theater and Seth Collins.
Kynsy released some of the best pop music this country has seen in the last year, her EP “Something To Do With Love” is a must listen and she plays Upstairs at Dolans on November 18th, while in the warehouse the same wonderful evening Ham sandwich present their electrifying new album “Magnify”.
The following Saturday at the same venue sees the much-delayed launch concert for Windings latest studio album, the superb ‘Focus on the Past 5’ – always a captivating gig, this is not to be missed.
Back in the recording room of The Commercial Research group with their show Visceral Thoughts, launch a trio of superb eclectic musical evenings on November 17, kill them charlie return to Limerick the following night with the support of Static vision and Doc Roe. Finally the spellbinding Molly O’Mahony returns to the Record Room on November 19 as part of the tour for his album “The House of David”.
That’s all for now, but if you have an upcoming music release or event in Limerick, please get in touch with our local man on the ground, John Loftus.
