Revealed: What Roman Abramovich and Thomas Tuchel talked about when they met after Chelsea’s Champions League triumph
Thomas Tuchel first met Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after their Champions League triumph in Porto on Saturday.
Despite not being named until January, Tuchel guided Chelsea to a top four and Champions League glory, with the latter standing in front of one of his bosses in Porto.
Abramovich and Tuchel had not yet spoken since the German arrived, but after the 1-0 win over Manchester City they found themselves on the pitch.
“I spoke to the owner at the moment on the field, it was the best moment for a first meeting, or the worst because the form now on it can only get worse”, Tuchel admitted after the game.
Talks continued the next day Sunday between the two men.
According to Standard, the conversations that took place between Abramovich and Tuchel on Sunday after the final Champions League triumph were about the club’s future plans, which included a new contract for Tuchel.
Plans are already underway for the summer transfer window in which Tuchel is expected to be backed, with the pair notably keen to secure a deal for Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku.
Tuchel added in his post-match press conference that his hunger and desire remain the same despite the European success, giving assurances to Abramovich ahead of next season.
“I can assure him that I will stay hungry”, Tuchel continued. “That I want the next title. That I feel absolutely happy to be part of a really ambitious club, a strong group that perfectly matches my beliefs, my passion for football at the moment, so my desire is to aim for more of victories.
“My desire is to grow as a coach and my desire is to push the squad from day one of next season. That’s who I am so it would be nice to meet him a little closer. contact, but not personally. We’re in constant contact and he indirectly knows what’s going on with me and now it’s nice to meet him. “
Tuchel is now set to sign another improved contract at Chelsea this summer.
