Roman Abramovich calls Emma Hayes to offer personal congratulations on WSL title win
Roman Abramovich has sent his personal congratulations to Emma Hayes after watching her Chelsea side win the Women’s Super League title.
Telegraph Sport understands that the billionaire Chelsea owner watched Chelsea beat Reading 5-0 on TV on Sunday before contacting Hayes himself.
Abramovich is said to have a close working relationship with Hayes, who had been in charge of the women’s team since 2012, and met her in Jerusalem in 2019.
Knowing that Chelsea could clinch the title by beating Reading, Abramovich erased his diary so he could watch the game and was delighted with the success.
Abramovich’s personal interest underscores Chelsea’s commitment to women’s football and Hayes is now preparing his side for this weekend’s Champions League final against Barcelona.
Hayes has previously spoken of Abramovich’s interest in women’s football: “When I arrived at Chelsea in 2012 we were an amateur team, but thanks to the owner’s enthusiasm we have built a lot in a short period of time. What a success we have had, we have achieved it together and I honestly think that we are more united than ever at the moment.
“I am excited about the future of Chelsea. Our owner is a huge fan of women’s football and always asks me what he can do to help. I’m more than aware of the challenges that women’s football always faces, but I think there are enough owners, broadcasters and fans out there who want the best for us.
