Roman Abramovich Russia Billionaire, Chelsea Owner, Seized Assets, Net Worth
Dirty, rich Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has been begging famous friends to lend him money to stay afloat.
The 55-year-old from English Premier League giants Chelsea has been stripped of rubles after his assets were frozen around the world.
Now he is said to have asked VIP friends for loans of $1m each – around £765,000 – to help pay his staff, The sun reports.
Rush Hour director Brett Ratner is among those interviewed by Abramovich, according to reports in the United States.
It is claimed he went to contacts in Hollywood and Wall Street – and to tech moguls.
Abramovich also reportedly approached the wealthy Rothschild family after their UK and US assets were seized.
It is believed that no one agreed to give him the money.
The beatings kept coming for Abramovich, who last week reportedly suffered symptoms of suspected poisoning, including going “blind for hours” in an attack that was blamed on Russian extremists.
Abramovich’s private jet was also grounded in the United States last month when around 100 Russian-linked planes were unable to depart as they were denied all services.
His biggest concern remains that he is being forced to sell his beloved football club following his country’s invasion of Ukraine and the seizure of its assets in the UK.
Abramovich, whose fortune was estimated at nearly $19bn before Russia invaded Ukraine, wants around $5.4bn for his club – but pundits say he will be lucky get half that amount.
Now he goes to friends in America, cap in hand, desperate for alms.
It’s unclear what the repercussions would be under international law of sanctions against Russian oligarchs in response to Vladimir Putin‘s war in Ukraine.
Abramovich is rumored to shell out £600,000 a week for staff.
He is well known for keeping a circle of famous friends. Names invited to his New Year’s Eve party in 2016 included movie star Leonardo DiCaprio, director George Lucas and the late pop star Prince.
Princess Beatrice was also thought to be on the guest list – along with Jen Meyer, wife of actor Tobey Maguire, who is a close friend of Abramovich’s wife.
Putin’s pal Abramovich has lost an estimated $7.6 billion since Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24, according to wealth ranking experts Forbes.
But he’s still believed to be worth more than $9 billion despite the sanctions.
Abramovich – who took part in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine – is now linked to five yachts worth more than £740million.
