The many extraordinary yachts owned by Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich
If one is to get a glimpse of what money can buy, Roman Abramovich’s yachts might be a great indicator. The owner of Chelsea Football Club is renowned for his love for some of the world’s finest sailing ships whose stately interiors can rival those of European palaces.
Roman Abramovich can buy as many ships or yachts as he wants. After all, Forbes estimates his net worth at around $ 14.6 billion (or 68 billion ringgit as of August 31, 2021).
In addition to Chelsea FC, the Israeli citizen of Russian origin owns stakes in steel giant Evraz and mining company Norilsk Nickel. In 2005, Abramovich earned $ 13 billion (RM 54 billion) by selling his 73 percent stake in Russian oil company Sibneft to Gazprom.
Abramovich was governor of the Chukotka region in the Russian Far East from 2001 to 2013. During this period, he spent 2.5 billion dollars (10.4 billion ringgit) for the development of the region. .
The billionaire’s fascination with gigantic luxury yachts is mirrored in automotive toys, ranging from supercars to some of the fanciest private jets the ultra-rich love to splurge on.
While Abramovich’s fleet will soon have a new member, Solaris, the current jewel among its ships is Eclipse – one of the three largest yachts in the world. There are others that he owns or has sold.
Boats are examples of great design. They are elegant, powerful, easily manoeuvrable, well balanced and technologically advanced.
Roman Abramovich is only 54 years old and is constantly adding investments and properties to his wealth. As he focuses on his future show, let’s take a look at some of the past and present gems from his private collection of superyachts.

Superyacht Solaris is nearing completion and will be Roman Abramovich’s new vessel on the waters when launched. Although not much is known about the boat, the Solaris was pictured during the second of its North Sea sea trials and gained media attention.
SuperYachts schedules reports that the Solaris is designed by Australian interior designer Marc Newson and built by Lloyd Werft, a German shipyard. It has a helipad and an outdoor beach club at the back (at the back of a sailboat). It also has a swimming pool.
It has two nine megawatt Azipods which, according to SuperYachts schedules, are the most powerful ever installed on a yacht. The Solaris has eight decks, and it could accommodate a staff of 60 and 36 passengers in its 18 super luxurious cabins. Its cost is estimated at US $ 600 million (RM 2.5 billion).
Nevertheless, the Solaris, which measures around 140 meters, is not the largest yacht in Abramovich’s armada – this credit goes to Eclipse.
The superyacht Eclipse measures a massive 162.5 meters. Abramovich bought the vessel in 2010 and is still in his possession. The most unique feature of the Eclipse is that it has a missile detection system and the master suite has bulletproof windows.
Designed by Terry Disdale and manufactured by German shipbuilder Blohm + Voss, it took around five years to build the Eclipse. It was the largest yacht in the world up to the 180 meter long superyacht Azzam, who is owned by UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, won the crown in 2013.
The Eclipse is a technological marvel. One of its two swimming pools can be used as a dance floor by moving up the granite floor to deck level with the push of a button. It can carry three helicopters at the same time – one each on its two helipads and one in the hangar below the foredeck. It has a submarine that can dive to a depth of about fifty meters.
The giant ship has nine decks with an array of luxurious services to choose from. The Eclipse has many amenities – including a cinema room and sauna – one would expect in a superyacht. The Eclipse cost Roman Abramovich $ 590 million (RM 2.4 billion) at the time of purchase, and its beach house-style interiors showcase the best of Art Deco, giving it a timeless feel.
The Eclipse is powerful. It can reach a maximum speed of 21 knots and cover 6,000 nautical miles with a full tank. The yacht can accommodate up to 36 guests in its 18 cabins and needs 70 people for its operations.
She underwent a redesign in 2015. Reports say she is still counted among the most expensive yachts in the world with a valuation of between US $ 600 million (RM 2.48 billion) to $ 1.5 billion. (RM 6.2 billion).
The big Blue
Before Eclipse became a prized possession of Roman Abramovich, it was this 112.8-meter luxury yacht that was the most beautiful in his collection. Built in 2000 by the German shipbuilder Bremer Vulkan, now bankrupt, it has 10 cabins that can accommodate 20 people. It has a crew of 35 support operations.
Abramovich bought the The big Blue from its former owner, the American telecommunications baron John McCaw. The owner of Chelsea FC then had it modified by adding a 5-meter swimming pool. In 2006, the billionaire sold it to his friend, oil mogul Eugene Shvidler, who currently owns it.
The The big Blue comes with its own fleet of smaller boats, a landing craft and two 11-meter sport boats. It was in the news in 2017 when some tourists couldn’t see the Statue of Liberty because the superyacht blocked the view.
The Ecstasea was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and built at the Feadship Royal Van Lent shipyard in the Netherlands in 2004. According to Superyacht schedules, the yacht measures 85.95 meters and has four MTU engines and a General Electric engine. The combined power gives Ecstasea an incredible top speed of around 33 knots.
She has state-of-the-art bedrooms designed in Asian decor by Terence Disdale, and an array of luxurious amenities accentuate her eight lavish cabins. The Ecstasea is designed for the stay of 15 occupants, with a support squad of 27 to pilot the boat.
It also has a helipad up front, where the platform can be lowered and the doors on either side can be closed on the helipad to turn it into a hangar.
The Ecstasea was sold by Abramovich in 2009.
The Sussurro was designed for speed. According to its manufacturer, Feadship, the machine, which was built in 1998, is equipped with two Paxman diesel engines and two TF40 gas turbines that power three water jets. The combined 15,000 hp can bring the all-aluminum craft to a top speed of 46 knots, which is enough for the owner to quickly reach distant dive sites.
De Voogt Naval Architects and Don Shead were responsible for its exterior design. Terence Disdale made the interiors, which look like a mixture of culturally steeped objects he collected on his travels in Africa and Asia, such as Zulu and Bali, respectively.
Light to near light materials were used to keep the total weight of the boat within prescribed limits to meet the speed factor. Along 162.5 meters Sussurro can accommodate 12 people in its six cabins. It also has five cabins that can accommodate 12 support staff to operate the boat.
Abramovich had bought it from its owner from the Middle East. According to a November 2020 report by International boat, Sussurro is currently valued at around US $ 22 million (RM 91 million) alone.
Measuring 115 meters, Moon was built to Lloyd Werft and delivered to Roman Abramovich in 2010. While its exteriors were designed by German ship designer Newcruise, the MoonThe tasteful interiors were done by Donald Starkey.
Known as the “Explorer’s Yacht,” its steel hull can traverse pack ice. It has two helipads, an indoor swimming pool, a beach club that goes down to the swimming platform and areas reserved for sunbathing.
The Moon has nine decks. She can accommodate a crew of 50 and take up to 18 guests in her nine cabins. It has two diesel-electric engines which give it a top speed of around 22 knots.
When he was delivered to Abramovich, he took him on a cruise with his family around the Kristiansand archipelago.
Azerbaijani businessman Farkhad Akhmedov bought it from Abramovich for around US $ 300 million (RM 1.24 billion) in 2014. Then it underwent an overhaul for an estimated $ 50 million ( RM 207 million). Today he is at the center of the divorce case between Akhmedov and his ex-wife Tatiana Akhmedova.
Currently owned by billionaire and Hong Kong real estate mogul Samuel Tak Lee, Pelorus was originally commissioned for a Saudi businessman who quickly sold it to Abramovich in 2003.
Pelorus has two Wärtsilä engines and can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots. It can accommodate 18 people in nine cabins and requires around 40 people for maintenance and operation.
Measuring 115 meters long, the Pelorus was built at the Krogerwerft shipyard of the German shipbuilder Lurssen. Its exterior was designed by Tim Heywood while Disdale’s style is evident inside, which exudes a luxurious beach house vibe.
Heywood made the best use of the size of the ship and built two helipads, two swimming pools, a lido and a transom that opens to form a platform at sea level. The master suite has a private terrace which cannot be seen from any part of the Pelorus.
Abramovich had previously loaned the ship to Chelsea FC players John Terry and Frank Lampard after the club’s English Premier League victory. Also, Terry took his wife Toni on their honeymoon on Pelorus in 2007.
In 2011, American film mogul David Geffen bought the Pelorus for 300 million US dollars (1.24 billion ringgit). Geffen then sold it that same year for US $ 214 million (RM 888 million) to a royal family in the United Arab Emirates.
