VFW Announces Essay Contest Winners | New
PIATT COUNTY – Piatt County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5346 in Monticello has presented its 2020-2021 school year awards for the annual VFW “Patriot’s Pen” Essay Contest and the “Voice of Democracy” Speech Contest.
The topic of this year’s Patriot’s Pen essay was, “What is patriotism to me?” The competition was open to all high school students nationwide. For Post 5346, Will Gravlin wrote the first place essay, with Makayala Harden and Addison Dorjahn respectfully ranking second and third. Additionally, Gravlin won first place in the VFW Illinois District 11 ranking, which covers all college students in Macon, Christian, DeWitt, Shelby, Moultrie and Piatt counties. The three recipients are students from Monticello Middle School.
The theme of this year’s Voice of Democracy speech was, “Is this America the Founding Fathers envisioned?” The Voice of Democracy competition is open to all high school students. Post 5346’s first place speech was given by Monticello High School student Chase Yohnka.
The themes for the 2021-2022 school year are, Patriot’s Pen, “How Can I Be a Good American?” and Voice of Democracy, “America: Where Do We Go From Here?” Applications can be found at www.vfw.org or by sending an email to [email protected]
