In 2014, in a segment of the BBC’s Two Newsnight series Encounters, in which leading figures interview each other, David Lynch and Patti Smith sat down together to chat.
In nine minutes, the two wonderful eccentric minds swirl between the subjects, discussing everything from Twin peaks and Blue velvet to Pussy Riot and artistic inspiration.
At first, Smith explains his song Grateful arrived fully formed in his head. Lynch, on the other hand, explains that ideas don’t come so easily.
“I get ideas in fragments… it’s like in the other room there is a puzzle… and the first piece I get is just a fragment of the whole puzzle, but I fall in love. of this fragment, and it promises more, “ he says.
Discussing Pussy Riot, Smith says:
“It’s something that goes back to biblical times. That kind of oppression and that kind of misunderstanding, take young girls that have families and hopes and dreams and put them in jail for doing a teenage prayer, really.
Of her interaction with Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina from Pussy Riot, she says: “One of the things they would say to me was, ‘Everyone wants us to talk to them, but what are we supposed to say? And I said, ‘You should say we’re all you because of our beliefs, our belief system http://getzonedup.com or trying to say something new, denouncing our governments or even our churches, or societies. We are all potentially in danger. Talk to a younger generation to think for themselves.
“These girls did something absolutely original. Like even a mother or a grandmother, they are in my prayers.
