‘We couldn’t get him, I would have liked to’ – Club adviser reveals he wanted Manchester United to sign Antony to join Premier League rivals ahead of Ajax move
Former Chelsea scout Piet de Visser has revealed he intends to bring Antony from Manchester United to Stamford Bridge during his spell with the west London side.
De Visser spent 17 years with the Blues as a personal adviser to former owner Roman Abramovich. The Dutchman was in charge until early summer when Abramovich sold the club to Todd Boehly and a consortium of investors.
The Dutch official admitted that he and Hans van der Zee, a former Ajax head scout, discovered the 22-year-old’s talent in the Brazilian youth ranks. However, De Visser couldn’t secure Antoine’s signature. Hans suggested that Antony move to Ajax to continue his development before joining a top side like Chelsea.
De Visser spoke on the Voetbal Nieuws podcast earlier today (September 12) and said (via Sport Witness):
“With Hans van der Zee, we saw him for the first time in the ranks of Brazilian youth and we were both charmed by him. It was a few years ago, just before he went at Ajax. I thought he had to take an intermediate step, then Hans suggested Ajax. And then we would take him directly from Ajax.
“We couldn’t have it, I would have liked it. He’s a boy with poison on his back. Sometimes he crosses the line, but he’s from the favela, right?
Antony joined Manchester United in the summer for a whopping €100m including add-ons. The Brazilian winger scored a goal in his debut appearance for the Red Devils against Arsenal in the Premier League on September 4.
Antony hails Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo
Antony has praised his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, saying the Portuguese striker is ‘the best in the world’.
Antony spoke to the media ahead of United’s Europa League game against Real Sociedad on September 9, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Red Devils. He said:
“No matter the age, there is immense talent in all the players. Words cannot describe Cristiano, the best in the world. In a few days, I learned a lot from him. He has an amazing mind and every time I talk to him I get a lot out of it.
Predicting a bright future for the Manchester side, the Brazilian concluded:
“I’m sure we have a solid attack and that’s very promising for the future.”
Manchester United are currently fifth in the standings. The Red Devils bounced back with four Premier League wins in a row after losing their first two games.
